We received a phone call from Mrs. B. who is stretcher bound at home and has to go for radiation treatments every business day for 12 visits. Will Medicare insurance cover the cost?

After two phone calls to Medicare and links to Medicare.gov, the official US Government Site for Medicare, we discovered in the Ambulance services section the following:

“Medicare Part B covers emergency ground ambulance transportation when you need to be transported to a hospital, critical access hospital (CAH), or skilled nursing facility (SNF) for medically necessary services, and transportation in any other vehicle could endanger your health.”

The Non-Emergency Ambulance Transportation is mentioned in the following paragraphs:

“In some cases, Medicare may pay for limited, medically necessary non-emergency ambulance transportation if you have a written order from your doctor saying that ambulance transportation is medically necessary.

Medicare covers ambulance services to and from your home to the nearest dialysis facility for treatment of End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) only if other forms of transportation would be harmful to your health. You may need a note from your doctor.

To summarize, Medicare will only cover non-emergency transport:

  • ·         In an ambulance, not a non-emergency medical transport vehicle.
  • ·         Only for End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
  • ·         With a note from the doctor stating medical necessity.

Mrs. B. non-emergency stretcher transport for radiation treatment is not covered by Medicare and she is personally responsible for payments.

  1. WOW just what I was looking for. Came here by searching
    for wheelchair transportation

  2. Non-Emergency Services refers to providing assistance to individuals during non-Emergency situations such as moving from one place to another. And if they want to travel during their discount periods, then NEMT services are there, for helping them.
